Africa Trip Day Three

Another early wake up call with coffee arriving to my tent at 5:30am.  6am for light breakfast and out we go by 6:30 for the first game drive of the day.  The guide discussed with us if we wanted to try and look for a Leopard, which would take us some distance and we couldn’t stop very often.  We decided to go for it.  We went out to the edge of the private reserve trying to find any signs of a Leopard, but unfortunately no luck.  But after spending some time with a group of Giraffes, we received a radio call that another group found some African Wild Dogs, same pair from day before, eating at an Impala kill.  The dogs were not too excited about us watching them so they would leave the kill, but when we leave they would return.  After a couple attempts we finally were able to spend some time watching them.  It appeared they had already had their fill because it looked like they were more playing with it vs eating.  We did get a couple stops for some bird photography on the way back to the Camp, but in general it was a slow morning.  But I do want to emphasize even though we didn’t see a big variety, it was great getting out.

After lunch the group I was with and I decided we wanted to try the Walking Safari.  The Walking Safari is more about education vs. seeing wildlife but we were interested in learning about how people live off the land, how to read tracks and signs of the wildlife and just more about the ecosystem on the Okavango Delta.  I found this very interesting, but it did carry some additional risks, which is why the guide was carrying a rifle the whole time.  Even though this wasn’t about seeing wildlife, I did get some interesting photos, especially of Zebras, while we were out there.  We didn’t do the Sundowner on this outing and headed directly back to the safari vehicle and back to Camp before sunset.  I have some photos of the Camp Social area at night below.  Big day tomorrow because I’ll be checking out of Shinde Camp and heading to the Chobe River on Day 4.
